Creating Sine Time Series

Create a Sine Wave Time Series

This method generates an equidistant sinusoidal time series. The method is invoked via the ETA menu entries File → New Time Series → Sine (see following figure).

In the window that opens (see the following figure), first enter the Start date, the Start time, and the Time zone for the result time series.

The next step is to define the Time axis. The Time Step size of the time series is defined here.

In the drop-down list, choose whether you want a Concrete time series or an Abstract time series. Only for concrete time series are the key data specified in the first step Start date, Start time, and Time zone taken into account. Instead, an abstract time series begins with day 00 and hour 00:00:00. For hourly increments, the next time step is day 00 and hour 01:00:00. In hourly steps, this is continued until the end of the time series (see following figure).

Under Data axis, you can define the Unit for the values of the sinusoidally generated time series and use the Offset value (default setting 0) and the Amplitude value (default setting 1) to restrict the range in which the values lie.

In the Sine specification area, the Period time (default value 8760 h), the Number of periods (default value 1), and the Angular phase shift (in multiples of π, default value 0) are to be specified. The following figure illustrates the meaning of the input values schematically.

For example, with a period time of 8760 h and a number of periods of 2, a time series is generated that contains a total of 2 years (2 x 8760 h).

The new time series is stored with the name Sine under Temporary time series (see figure above). It can be viewed and further processed in the plot window and in the value table.
