Tutorial 34: Combined Heat and Power Cycle (Gas and Steam)

Navigation:

This project examines the meeting of electricity demand using a combined cycle power plant (CCP) process.

The simulation takes the chemical composition of the fuel into account. As a result, stoichiometric combustion is calculated in the components, and supply and exhaust air flows are generated. The first week of January only is simulated: Input time series are given for this period only, and the Filter for Simulation is set to this period. Steam demand gradually increases (see following figure). Weather data are not given. Interest and Tax rates are 0. The low pressure (LP) is 16 bar at 16 °C, and the high pressure (HP) is 100 bar at 17 °C.

Reference Case

In the reference case, a Steam Generator meets the Steam Demand.

Variant 1 with CCP

Variant 1 considers the investment in a gas turbine whose waste heat generates steam in addition to the boiler. The additional electricity generated is fed into the grid and compensated.

Variants 2 and 3 With Duct Burner

In variants 2 and 3, two options for auxiliary firing (duct burner) are simulated. The article Heat Recovery Steam Generator provides further information on these solutions.

The control system ensures that the auxiliary firing runs only when the gas turbine is also in operation. Accordingly, the Gas Turbine has a Minimum part load.

Variant 2 With Duct Burner A

The article Heat Recovery Steam Generator describes this solution in detail.

Variants 3 With Duct Burner B

Variant 3 is a simple and quick alternative to Variant 2. Auxiliary fire can also be modeled using a separate Steam Generator.
