Placing Components on the Scheme

The component templates are dragged and dropped from the component template library to the scheme workspace. You can see this procedure in the video tutorial.

Components are copied on the scheme workspace by drag-and drop while holding down the <Ctrl> key.

The components can be placed and arranged anywhere on the scheme.

The working area can be zoomed  in and out. The Zoom interactive function enlarges a rectangular area to be marked with the mouse to the size of the workspace.

The scheme can be re-fitted into the desktop with a single click on Zoom fit.

Certain component properties can be displayed using Overlay icons.

Convention of the Alignment

The conventions for a clear layout of the scheme illustrated in the following figure should be observed:

  • Suppliers are arranged on the left side of the scheme.
  • Opposite these are the demands at the right edge of the scheme.
  • In between are the energy converters and the other components (e.g., tariffs).

This alignment is recommended due to the position of the pins on the components. If required, the components on the scheme can also be rotated or mirrored in order to fit them better into the overall system.

There must be enough space between the components for the network connections to be established. When arranging the components, the networks should already be taken into account.

Connecting Networks

Components are connected to the networks at the pins. This is done by drag-and-drop from an output pin (filled square) to an input pin (empty square) or from a pin to the existing net line. During docking, the pins or nets to be connected are bordered by selectors (colored boxes, see following slider). Only pins of the same material model can be connected. Input and output pins can each be assigned several connections to components. The connection must always be made to a free pin.

Routing of the nets (the alignment of the net connections) is done automatically and can be corrected manually.

Network connections can be removed by clicking and marking them (by red selectors), and pressing the <Delete> key in the second step (see following slider) or selecting  Delete from the context menu.

Alignment of Components on Auxiliary Lines

A grid can be displayed for orientation in order to evenly arrange the components on horizontal and vertical lines. The grid consists of vertically and horizontally evenly arranged points. The settings of this Grid are made in the options dialog of the scheme. There, the Grid can be set to Magnetic so that components are attracted by the grid and thus easier to place. The insertion point is the marker in the lower left corner of each component. As an alternative to the Magnetic option, activate the Align to grid points function in the Scheme ribbon or use the context menu of a component to Magnetisch Snap it to grid.

Selecting the Components

To align components automatically, they are selected first. This is done either individually by clicking with the left mouse button while holding down the <Shift> key after the first click, or by dragging a virtual rectangular frame around the components to be aligned with the mouse button held down.

If you select a single component, the first selected component is surrounded by red markers, the second selected component by blue markers, and the other components by black markers. If selected by a frame, the components are highlighted with black markers.

Several selected components can be moved together on the scheme.

Arrangement of Objects on the Scheme

The following functions are available for the selected components in the Layout group of the Scheme ribbon.

They are used to arrange the components and to design the view. The selected objects can be Centered vertically as well as horizontally or Distributed at the same distance from each other (equally spaced). They can be Aligned at the top, bottom, left, or right.

The distance between the components can be defined in two ways.

The first variant uses the distance between the first two selected components as the reference distance at which all components are arranged. To do this, select the first component with a click, then press the <Shift>-key and hold it down while selecting the other components with mouse clicks.

The second variant calculates the average distance and applies it to all components. To do this, hold down the left mouse button and drag a frame around the components to select them.

The components can also be aligned vertically or horizontally according to the position of the pins.

Pin-Oriented Alignement

The Pin-Oriented Alignment works for two components at a time.

The order in which they are selected determines which component is used as the reference. The first selected component determines the alignment.

Using the toolbar, more than two components can also be aligned vertically/horizontally to the same level of connection points after the components have been marked with the left mouse button while holding down the Shift key (see following figure).

Rotating, Mirroring, and Renaming

The context menu on the scheme, opened by right-clicking on the component icon, allows to Rotate (Nach Links Turn left, Nach Rechts Turn right, Turn 180°), Mirror (Horizontal horizontally, Vertikal vertically), and  Rename the component (see following slider).

The rotation and mirroring is carried out from this context menu both for the symbol and for the name of the component.

The components can also be renamed in the scheme by double-clicking on the component name. Alternatively, renaming is possible in the project explorer via the context menu of the component. Name changes of the component always have a global effect on all representatives of the component.

To the Foreground and to the Background

Under the context menu entry Order, the symbol of a component can be moved In den Vordergrund To the foreground or      In den Hintergrund To the background. This decides which of the components overlaps the others when the components superimpose. The transparent areas of the component symbols in the foreground let the components shine through in the background.

Snap to Grid

With the context menu function Magnetisch Snap to Grid, the component can be aligned with the grid. The insertion point (the marker in the lower left corner of the component) is moved to the next grid point. This function is independent of the grid setting Magnetic.

Exporting Component

Using the context menu you can Komponente exportieren export a component to import it later into other projects.
By default, a component template with the extension e-ctpl is stored in the folder
C:\Users\$User name$\Documents\TOP-Energy\My components.
Any other storage location can be selected in the export dialog.

Component Label

For a better design, especially of more complicated projects, the component labels can be freely arranged on the scheme by drag-and-drop. They can not only be placed under, but also next to and above a component. The label can also be tilted as desired. A handle as marked in the following figure can be used for this purpose.

Rotate the component name

Component labels have their own context menus on the scheme which are called by right-clicking on the component label. Using this menu, you can mirror the label separately or rotate it by any angle.

The font of the component name can also be set via the context menu (see following slider).
